In Spoof We Trust

Superhero Movie was released last weekend, fueling the unstoppable juggernaut that has become the modern day spoof film, now as ubiquitous as a Clooney-fronted political/legal thriller. They’ve all been following the same format—cram as many films as possible under the spoofiscope, cast Regina Hall as the sassy black friend, mix in strained topical references, serve for few to enjoy. Fellow COMACC writer David Micevic put it best: “What happened to the good old days of solely Leslie Nielsen spoofs?”

When Spoof Movie comes out (release date, cast, director and script TBD), the entire genre will meta-implode on itself, like a white dwarf having an existential crisis. But before that happens—which, at this rate, isn’t so far off—here’s a look back at the pieces that made up the noughts’ spoof films. At least the trailers.

Scary Movie (2000)

Carmen Electra in top billing + Matrix fighting + getting bashed in the head + Blair Witch (remember how scary that movie was based on hype alone?)

Scary Movie 2 (2001)

Fake build-up to “hilarious” trailer realization that it’s not really a scary movie + gay sex with black guys + stoner laughing

Not Another Teen Movie (2001)

Sex with pies, again + jokes about rich white people + the grossest woman-on-woman make out scene in movie history

Scary Movie 3 (2003)

Static in shape of boobs + bad cell phone reception + getting bashed in the head + Leslie Nielsen?!?! + another Matrix reference + sassy music

Scary Movie 4 (2006)

Dr. Phil

Date Movie (2006)

(View trailer)
A low point in Fred Willard’s and Alyson Hannigan’s careers + cat poop

Epic Movie (2007)

Narnia invaded by clutter + admission of a smaller writing staff + a spoof of Lazy Sunday, which in and of itself a spoof, and deals with Narnia as well and…whoa

Meet the Spartans (2007)

There is nothing redeeming about this film

Superhero Movie (2008)

Strange, this isn’t so much a spoof of superhero movies as it is a spoof of Spiderman. And grandma ends up in a woodchipper.
